Trending keywords are search terms that are receiving a noticeable increase in searches over a particular period. The increase might last for a few hours, several weeks or much longer, depending on what has caused the interest.
A keyword can start trending because of breaking news, a new product, an event, a seasonal change, a social media topic or a sudden shift in what people want to know.
A trending keyword is therefore not necessarily a keyword with high search volume overall. A relatively small topic can be considered trending if searches for it rise sharply compared with its usual level.
How Can You Find Trending Keywords?
Google Trends is one way to see whether interest in a search term is rising or falling. SEO keyword tools can also show changes in search activity and help identify subjects that are starting to attract more attention.
The timing matters. Some keywords follow predictable patterns every year. Searches related to Christmas shopping, tax returns or seasonal services, for example, may rise at roughly the same time each year.
Other trends appear with little warning and may disappear just as quickly.
Trending Keywords and SEO
Trending keywords can give websites ideas for timely articles, updates to existing content or new topics that people have recently started searching for.
However, a keyword being popular does not automatically make it useful for every website. The subject still needs to have a reasonable connection to the business and its audience.
It is also worth checking whether the trend is likely to continue. Creating a large amount of content around a short-lived search spike may bring little value once interest disappears.
For SEO, trending keyword data is most useful when it reveals a relevant change in how people are searching, particularly when existing website content can be updated while the subject is still attracting attention.
