What Is Position Tracking?

Position tracking is the process of checking where a website appears in Google for selected search terms. It is also commonly called keyword rank tracking or rank tracking.

For example, a dental clinic might track its position for “dentist Melbourne”, “dental implants Melbourne” and other searches related to its services. Tracking these keywords over time shows whether the website is moving up, moving down or remaining relatively stable in the search results.

How Does Position Tracking Work?

SEO tools can check a set of keywords regularly and record where the website appears for each one. Results can often be tracked by country, city or device, which is useful because Google results are not identical for every searcher.

Position data can then be compared across different dates. This makes it easier to see whether changes to a website, new content, competitors or Google updates have affected rankings.

Individual rankings can move from day to day, so longer-term patterns are generally more useful than a small change on a single date.

Position Tracking and SEO

Position tracking helps show whether a website is gaining or losing visibility for searches that matter to the business. It can also identify pages that are close to reaching stronger positions and keywords that have dropped unexpectedly.

Rankings, however, are only one part of SEO performance. A high position does not necessarily mean a keyword is generating clicks, enquiries or sales.

For this reason, position tracking is more useful when viewed together with impressions, clicks, click-through rate and website conversions. This gives a clearer picture of whether strong Google positions are actually bringing useful traffic to the website.
