Keyword frequency is the number of times a particular keyword appears on a webpage.
For example, if the phrase “dental implants Melbourne” appears five times in an article, its keyword frequency is five. This is a simple count and does not take the total length of the page into account.
Keyword frequency is sometimes confused with keyword density. Keyword density measures how often a keyword appears in relation to the total number of words, usually as a percentage.
Does Keyword Frequency Matter for SEO?
Using a relevant keyword can help make the subject of a page clear, but there is no required number of times that a keyword needs to appear.
Repeating the same phrase throughout a page can make the writing awkward. It can also lead to keyword stuffing when keywords are added mainly for search engines rather than because they belong naturally in the text.
Modern search engines can understand related words, variations and the wider meaning of a page. An article about dental implants, for example, does not need to repeat the exact phrase “dental implants” in every section.
How Often Should You Use a Keyword?
There is no useful formula that works for every page. A keyword might appear several times in a long guide and only once or twice on a short page.
The main keyword can usually be included in important places where it makes sense, such as the page title, main heading, introduction and relevant sections of the content.
After that, the wording should follow the subject naturally. Related terms and different ways of describing the same topic can be used where appropriate.
For SEO, checking keyword frequency can help spot excessive repetition, but reaching a particular number should not be the target. The page should read clearly while making its subject easy to identify.
